Bridge Cottage – 1986

“One late September morning whilst on vacation, my brother and I strolled through a village bordering England and Wales and came across the enchanting ‘Bridge Cottage’.  The immediate timeless quality of the cottage transported me back in time.   At last, after first seeing it on a calendar and a great deal of research I had tracked it down, well almost.  The owners of the original calendar cottage becoming upset with people taking shots of their home had obscured the view from the lane with a screen of trees.  Frustrated at prevented from capturing the intended image I realized my good fortune as next to it stood ‘Bridge Cottage’ an image I considered far more interesting and one that can not be found anywhere else, i.e. books, cards or calendars.

‘Bridge Cottage’ was built approximately in the eighteenth century from original local stone and has immaculate thatched roofs, thatching being an ancient craft tradition now in revival and hugely expensive.

That September morning rainfall was heavy and the well stocked, quintessential cottage garden was sparkling and vibrantly alive.  To hold the colorful, fresh and natural beauty I felt compelled to capture its simple, pretty charm.  To obtain necessary height I balanced precariously on the bridge wall and averted my eyes from the far-reaching drop to the icy waters – the things you do for art.  Despite the journey to discover my subject, I was thrilled with the images I stole that day and even more thrilled to share this magical vision with those whose eyes rest upon it.

”I do hope you take pleasure from this stunning ancient cottage in all its English glory and engage with it as I first did on that wet September morning.”
